Aveyron is one of the most dog-friendly departements in France. Wide open spaces, quiet hiking trails, welcoming village terraces — here, your dog is rarely a problem and often another good reason to choose your accommodation carefully.
Where to stay with your dog in Millau
At Hotel des Causses, pets are welcome — in your room, on the terrace and in our restaurant La Chaleur Nordique. A flat fee of 9 euros per stay applies (not per night), which is very reasonable for a multi-day visit. Please let us know when booking so we can prepare your welcome accordingly.
Best walks with a dog around Millau
- Causse du Larzac — a vast, sparsely populated limestone plateau, ideal for long walks. Sheep flocks graze here, so keep your dog on a lead near pastoral areas.
- Tarn riverbanks — from the centre of Millau, the riverside path follows the Tarn for several kilometres. Flat, easy, and perfect for dogs who prefer a gentler pace.
- Gorges du Tarn — the valley-floor trails, particularly between La Malene and Les Detroits, make for a spectacular hike. Avoid the peak summer heat.
- Causse Noir — less well known than the Larzac, this causse offers a wilder, more forested landscape with very few people outside of high season.
What to bring
- Plenty of water — the causses are dry, even in overcast weather.
- A long lead — practical on the open plateaux to give your dog some freedom while keeping control.
- A tick check after every walk — the causse vegetation is favourable to ticks from April through October.
- Up-to-date pet documents — health booklet, microchip or tattoo identification.
Dog-friendly restaurants and terraces
Terrace culture is well established in southern France. Most cafes and restaurants in Millau's town centre welcome leashed dogs. Our restaurant La Chaleur Nordique also has a terrace where your companion is more than welcome.
Good to know
In the classified areas of the Parc naturel regional des Grands Causses, dogs must be kept on a lead from May to September to protect wildlife and livestock. Check locally before each hike.
